What Can I Do to Prevent My Child From Developing Fluorosis?

Infant to 3 Years Old:

  • Breast feed your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the exclusive use of human milk for all infants (except for the few for whom breastfeeding is determined to be harmful) until they are 6 months of age, then adding solid foods and continuing to breastfeed until the child is at least 12 months old.
  • If your baby is primarily fed infant formula, consult your doctor on the best type of formula for your baby.
  • When your child’s teeth start coming in, brush them thoroughly twice a day (morning and night) or as directed by a dentist or physician.
  • Supervise children’s brushing to ensure that they use of the appropriate amount of toothpaste, which is no more than a smear or the size of a grain of rice.

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s worsens over time. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer’s lives 4 to 8 years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

Dental fluorosis

Fluorosis isn’t a disease and doesn’t affect the health of your teeth. In most cases, the effect is so subtle that only a dentist would notice it during an examination. The type of fluorosis found in the United States has no effect on tooth function and may make the teeth more resistant to decay.

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be younger-onset Alzheimer’s if it affects a person under 65. Younger-onset can also be referred to as early-onset Alzheimer’s. People with younger-onset Alzheimer’s can be in the early, middle or late stage of the disease.
